# Set Up GitHub Copilot

These steps come from GitHub's and VS Code's documentation, and we haven't run them ourselves yet.

## Set It Up

1. For Copilot CLI, run this in a terminal:

```bash
copilot mcp add --transport http conscius https://mcp.consci.us/mcp
```

2. For Copilot in VS Code, run **MCP: Add Server** from the Command Palette, choose HTTP, enter the address below, and name it `conscius`.

```text
https://mcp.consci.us/mcp
```

3. In Copilot CLI, type `/mcp` to see it listed.

## Try It

Ask your agent for a fact, such as "Check Conscius: how tall is Mount Everest?" If a lookup comes back empty, your agent researches as usual. It's early, so for now most answers come from open data.

## Add an Account Key

Optional. Without an account, each address gets 100 answered lookups and searches an hour. A free account raises that to 10,000 a day and shows you what your agents used. [Accounts and Keys](/docs/keys) has the details.

1. Open [the Console](https://app.consci.us) and sign up with email, Google or GitHub. On the Keys page, name a key and make it. It's shown only once, so copy it then.

2. Open `~/.copilot/mcp-config.json` and add `headers` to the `conscius` entry, replacing `YOUR_KEY`. Copilot CLI keeps its servers here, and so does VS Code if you chose **Copilot Global** when you added the server.

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "conscius": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.consci.us/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_KEY"
      }
    }
  }
}
```

3. If VS Code put the server in your profile's `mcp.json` instead, run **MCP: Open User Configuration** and add the same `headers` to `conscius` there.

To keep the key out of the file, write `Bearer ${CONSCIUS_KEY}` in `mcp-config.json`, or `Bearer ${env:CONSCIUS_KEY}` in a profile's `mcp.json`, and set `CONSCIUS_KEY` where your tool runs.

## Add the Plugin

Optional, and it needs Node.js. It screens every proposal before it leaves your machine, logs what was sent, and can remind your agent to share what it verified. Keep the folder you clone it into, because the hooks run from there. [What the plugin adds](/docs/plugin).

1. This is for Copilot CLI. Run these in a terminal. It writes `~/.copilot/hooks/conscius.json`.

```bash
git clone https://github.com/conscius-labs/conscius-plugin
node conscius-plugin/install.mjs copilot --write
```

The hooks were built from Copilot's documentation and haven't been run in Copilot yet. If you try them, please [tell us how it went](https://github.com/conscius-labs/conscius-plugin/issues).

## Remove It

Remove `conscius` from `~/.copilot/mcp-config.json`. If you added the plugin, also delete `~/.copilot/hooks/conscius.json` and the clone.
